1. Assam CM election on SundayThe BJP on Saturday named Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and its general secretary Arun Singh as central observers for the election of the leader of its legislative party in Assam. The legislative party meeting is expected to be held on Sunday, and the leader will be the next State Chief Minister as the BJP-headed alliance has won a majority in the State Assembly polls. 2. Oxygen refilling facility for villages begins on Sunday: Noida AuthorityAccording to an official statement, the Noida Authority will begin a facility to refill oxygen cylinders of COVID-19 patients who are in home isolation in villages from Sunday. The decision comes within days of a similar facility being launched for residents of urban areas through their Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Apartment Owners' Associations (AOAs) which have set up isolation centres. 3. Islamic extremists behind attack on ex-President: Maldives officialA top official in the Maldives said on Saturday that Islamic extremists were responsible for an explosion that critically wounded former President Mohamed Nasheed earlier this week, as police said they arrested two of four suspects. Hospital officials said Saturday that Mr. Nasheed, 53, was conscious and no longer needed breathing support, but remains in an intensive care unit after initial life-saving surgeries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs. 4. Bomb kills at least 30 near girls' school in the Afghan capitalA bomb exploded near a girls' school in a majority Shiite district of west Kabul on Saturday, killing at least 30 people, many of them young pupils between 11 and 15 years old. The Taliban condemned the attack and denied any responsibility. Ambulances evacuated the wounded as relatives and residents screamed at authorities near the scene of the blast at Syed Al-Shahda school, in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighbourhood, Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said. 5. Hamilton tops qualifying at Spanish GP for 100th poleLewis Hamilton won his 100th career pole position after barely edging Max Verstappen to the fastest time in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday. Hamilton pushed his Mercedes to a flying lap of 1 minute, 16.74 seconds. Verstappen in his Red Bull was only 0.03 seconds behind. On Sunday, he will be looking to equal Michael Schumacher's six wins in Montmeló and claim his 98th career victory. 6. Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developmentsIndia recorded 4,03,626 new COVID-19 cases until 11.37 p.m. on May 8. As many as 4,091 new deaths were also registered. The country has so far reported a total of 2,22,95,911 cases and 2,42,398 deaths. Maharashtra reported 53,605 infections, followed by Karnataka (47,563) and Kerala (41,971).
