Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy
| TUE, MAR 16, 2021 | | | Hello, The Covid relief bill is law. Stimulus payments are hitting bank accounts. Vaccinations are ramping up. There's still work for the administration to do in carrying out the measure's mission. President Biden and Vice President Harris are hitting swing states to tout the legislation's benefits. But there is also some nitty-gritty stuff that needs to be done at higher and lower levels of government alike. Here are some of the keys: - Stimulus czar: A former leading economic advisor to Presidents Clinton and Obama is overseeing how the relief bill is being implemented. The administration announced Gene Sperling's appointment Monday. It is a role Biden himself played in the first year of the Obama administration, when the government injected hundreds of billions of dollars into an economy struggling to bounce back from the 2008 financial crisis.
- PPP patrol: The Senate on Tuesday is primed to confirm Isabel Guzman as the Small Business Administration boss. She steps into the role after overseeing small business support in California, the nation's biggest state, during the worst of the pandemic. Now she will inherit oversight of the federal government's Paycheck Protection Program emergency loan program.
- Comeback caution: The economy is looking stronger and stronger, and millions of vaccines are being injected every day. The president is aiming for a more normal Fourth of July than last year's. But the administration is still warning people not to get ahead of themselves. "Don't spike the ball on the five-yard line. Wait until you get into the end zone," Dr. Anthony Fauci said over the weekend. "We are not in the end zone yet."
