Trump won’t back down on tariffs

TicToc Tonight

Greetings, TicToc readers! Thursday's almost over. Here's what's happening:

But first...

Mexico tariffs to be triggered Monday

President Trump isn't backing down from levying tariffs on Mexico until it stems Central American migrants. GOP senators warned of economic harm if a 5% tariff on all Mexican goods is enacted, and Mexico's foreign minister spent much of the week trying to talk the administration out of the sanctions. Still, "at this point," Vice President Mike Pence said, "the tariffs are going to be imposed on Monday."

More:

  • A U.S. official said the 5% tariffs could be short-lived if Mexico follows through on its promise to crack down on immigration.
  • Mexico proposed sending 6,000 national guard troops to its border with Guatemala as part of a deal to avert the tariffs.
