Juneteenth is now a U.S. federal holiday

Greetings, QuickTake readers! This week, Biden creates the first new national holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Plus: China gets one step closer to building its own space station. Stream now for free.

Juneteenth is now a U.S. holiday

President Joe Biden signed legislation Thursday to make June 19 a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., with most government employees granted paid leave on Friday.

"Great nations don't walk away. We come to terms with the mistakes we made. And in remembering those moments, we begin to heal, and grow stronger."

The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act establishes the first new federal holiday in nearly four decades and marks the day when the last enslaved African Americans were freed after Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

When June 19 falls on a weekend, as in 2021, the holiday will be observed on either the Friday before or the Monday after Juneteenth. On Friday, dozens of companies will honor the day for the first time.

J.C. Penney and Spotify will give workers a paid day off. JPMorgan will close branches early, while Bank of America and Citigroup will let staffers take a personal day. GM and Fiat Chrysler will hold a moment of silence.

Momentum for the holiday built quickly through the week after the House passed the measure with a 415-14 vote on Wednesday, a day after it cleared the Senate by unanimous consent. During a speech at the White House, Biden said he was "pleased" it garnered strong bipartisan support.

"I hope this is the beginning of a change in the way we deal with one another," he said.

What to watch if

...you're still skeptical the Olympics will happen. Athletes and officials will face harsh penalties for violating virus protocols in Tokyo this summer, said organizers, who'll track participants and foreign journalists via GPS.

...it doesn't feel quite like summer yet. Texas is sweltering in triple-digit heat that arrived earlier this year than at any other time in a decade, forcing homes and businesses to conserve power to stave off blackouts.

...you didn't win a seat on Bezos's Blue Origin rocket. China launched three astronauts into space Thursday, bringing the country one step closer to completing its new space station, called Tiangong or Heavenly Palace.

One question, answered

Why did the Mexico City metro collapse? An independent probe showed the May 3 disaster, in which a section of the elevated train line buckled to the ground, killing 26 people, was caused by "structural failure," including insufficient studs and possibly defective concrete.

We want to know

Are you planning a post-Covid move abroad? A new generation of jet-setters is afoot as more firms offer remote work as a job perk. But country-hopping employees, beware: You may be required to file multiple taxes in different countries and lose benefits from tax treaties between jurisdictions.
