Nine suspected al-Qaeda terrorists have been arrested by the NIA in Kerala and West Bengal. The three arrested from Ernakulam and the six held in Murshidabad are suspected to have links to "Pakistan-funded al-Qaeda module". The NIA said they had been radicalised over social media to carry out attacks in several places including Delhi. Material seized from the suspects included locally made firearms and an armour, and fundamentalist literature. Reports suggest some of those arrested in West Bengal are linked to Kerala by the migrant labour flow. A report in July by a U.N. group had warned that there were a growing number of Islamic State-linked terrorists in Kerala and Karnataka and that the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent was planning attacks in the region. These arrests, though not linked specifically to the AQIS, seem to bear out the report's warnings. The arrests have also triggered political reactions, with the Congress and the BJP in Kerala accusing the LDF government of making the State a safe haven for terrorists and ignoring the U.N. report. In West Bengal, it was the Governor who made a politicised statement, accusing the police of running errands for the TMC government and letting law and order suffer. The arrests have brought to light the existence of an inter-State terror network at an advanced state of preparation for attacks. This, and the political reactions the arrests have invoked, are what make this story important. |
