Here are the big stories that you need to follow today: Gangster Vikas Dubey killed in alleged encounter Vikas Dubey, the history-sheeter accused of shooting dead eight policemen in Kanpur's Bikru village last week, was killed in an alleged encounter this morning while being brought to Uttar Pradesh from Ujjain, the U.P. police said. Dubey was shot twice after he allegedly attempted to flee from police custody after firing at the police team, a few kilometres ahead of Kanpur, police said. However, a medical report is still awaited. The UP police said the vehicle carrying Dubey lost control and overturned after the driver, who was tired after a long journey, took a sudden turn as he tried to avoid a herd of cows and buffaloes that suddenly ran onto the road. The accident happened near a hospital in Sachendi area on the national highway in Kanpur. Several opposition leaders have demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge to find out if the gangster's arrest would have 'exposed' the people who had allegedly protected him till now. MP police says no transit remand sought The Madhya Pradesh police, meanwhile, has said the UP police was taking Dubey from Ujjain to Kanpur without obtaining a transit remand from a local magistrate. Adarsh Katiyar, Madhya Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Intelligence, told The Hindu, "Transit remand was to be taken by the Uttar Pradesh Police as he was wanted by them. That was their call." Confirming that the Uttar Pradesh Police hadn't produced Dubey before a magistrate in Ujjain, Arvind Tomar, in charge of the Mahakal Police Station under which Dubey was arrested, said, "The Ujjain Superintendent of Police received an application from the Kanpur Police saying Dubey was absconding and carried a reward. And in order to complete the judicial process, he should be handed over to them. So, we handed him over to them in compliance with that". Nine minors rescued from Muzaffarnagar Ashram Nine minors have been rescued from an ashram in the Shukrataal area of Muzaffarnagar and four of them found to have been sexually abused. Two persons, including a self-styled priest and manager of the ashram, have been arrested, police said. ICSE announces exam results The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) on July 10 announced results for Class 10 and 12 exams even as it decided against bringing out a merit list this year in view of "exceptional circumstances". The CISCE had to cancel its pending exams in view of the spike in Covid-19 cases. The results have been calculated on the basis of an alternative assessment scheme decided by it. As per the results announced, a total of 2,06,525 candidates have cleared the Class 10 exams, known as the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), while 1,377 candidates were unsuccessful. The Class 12 exams, called the Indian School Certificate (ISC) exam, were cleared by 85,611 candidates while 2,798 students were unsuccessful. "Given the exceptional circumstances, this year CISCE will not be publishing a merit list for either the ICSE or ISC year 2020 Examinations," CICSE Chief Executive and Secretary Gerry Arathoon said. Covid Watch: Numbers and Developments The number of coronavirus cases reported from India stood at 8,18,906 at the time of publishing this newsletter, with the death toll at 22,122. India's fatality rate from Covid-19 has declined to 2.72% from 2.82% a month earlier, which is lower than that of many other countries, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. Meanwhile, a complete lockdown will be imposed in Maharashtra's Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and a few rural areas under the district from July 13 to July 23 amid a surge in coronavirus cases. Pune reported a record 1,803 new infections on Friday. In brief: The government said it was suspending the release of headline industrial output numbers for May due to inadequate data collection. Most industrial businesses were not operating from March onwards, a statement released by the Ministry of Statistics said. The government had earlier suspended the release of industrial production numbers for April, as well as retail inflation data for April and May. The government said "it may not be appropriate to compare the IIP for May 2020 with those of months preceding the Covid-19 pandemic." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today criticised the University Grants Commission's decision to conduct the final-term examinations in colleges and educational institutions by September amid the pandemic. Hitting out at the UGC, he tweeted: "It is extremely unfair to conduct exams during the Covid-19 pandemic. UGC must hear the voice of the students and academics. Exams should be cancelled and students promoted on basis of past performance." People wear Turkish flags in front of Hagia Sophia after a court decision that paves the way for it to be converted from a museum back into a mosque, in Istanbul, Turkey. A Turkish court has annulled the museum status of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, a world-famous cultural site, enabling it to be converted into a mosque, according to the BBC. The 1,500-year-old Hagia Sophia was founded as a cathedral and later made into a mosque by the Ottomans. It became a museum in 1934 and is also a Unesco World Heritage site.
