The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed many employers to think seriously about reshaping their office layouts for the time when their workers return. In many offices, a return to current layouts seems unwise, or unrealistic, or both.
Social media company Snap is getting ahead of this curve by making changes now to their floorplans, CEO Evan Spiegel told CNBC. From ice dispensers to temperature checks, Snap wants the office ready for when the world is. Former FDA chief (and CNBC contributor) Dr. Scott Gottlieb is urging all companies to take a proactive approach when it comes to planned office reopenings.
All this makes us think seriously about the layout of all of our favorite spaces. There's no chance venues like stadiums, arenas or theaters will be renovated to address the virus threat – will management commit to seating every other row and every other seat and enforce distancing when we return to some activities? What about airlines? Will governments set the standards, or leave it up to individual companies, and their customers, to decide? The hope, of course, is that this virus runs its course and we eventually get a vaccine that will allow all of this to go back to normal. But that may be a long way off.
