Impeachment with a twist

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: A day of deadly shootings, Apple's newest Mac Pro, and the Pats stumble into Spygate 2.0.

3 Senate impeachment wild cards

Democrats unveiled two articles of impeachment Tuesday charging President Trump with "high crimes and misdemeanors" for abuse of power and obstruction. Trump has openly cheered for the impeachment process to move to the friendlier confines of the GOP-led Senate where he'll likely get acquitted, but there could still be a few surprises along the way.

  • Chief Justice John Roberts. All eyes will be on how he presides over the trial with such a thin precedent in place. That gives him some legal elbow room but any of his rulings can be challenged by a Senate vote where Republicans would have the upper hand.
  • New witnesses. GOP senators have mused calling Joe or Hunter Biden, Adam Schiff or even the whistle-blower to testify. Subpoenas could also go out to those who didn't testify to the House, such as Mike Pompeo, Mick Mulvaney, John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani.
  • GOP divisions. Mitch McConnell said it's "inconceivable" that the Senate will convict Trump, but setting the trial's parameters will take full unity if Republicans want to go it alone. Without that, the Senate can't consider legislation or confirm nominees during the trial.

$ignificant figures

12 people. The total number killed Tuesday in separate mass shootings in a hospital waiting room in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and outside a bodega in Jersey City, New Jersey.

$2.3 trillion. Climate change policies could jolt stocks and slash the value of companies from the fossil fuel, agriculture and auto sectors by up to by 4.5%, a new report says.

25%. A record 1/4 of Americans say they or a family member put off treatment for a serious health condition in the past year because of the cost, up from 19% a year ago.

Highly quotable

"Much better than Nafta." Democrats reached a deal with the White House to endorse the USMCA trade deal, which Nancy Pelosi called "infinitely better" than what Trump proposed.

"Never viewed any video footage." New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he was unaware that a crew "inappropriately filmed" the Cincinnati Bengals' sideline, violating NFL rules.

"They." Merriam-Webster declared it the 2019 word of the year after tweaking its meaning to include a person with a non-binary gender identity and searches rose 313% over last year.

This is not normal

Polar heat. Alaska recorded its hottest month ever in November, as the Arctic warms twice as fast as the rest of the globe. The warmer temps up North are pushing cod populations to new lows and starving reindeer.

The future is now

It's not a cheese grater. Apple's Mac Pro desktop hit the market with a $5,999 price tag for basic specs and runs up to a whopping $52,000 for a fully loaded computer — and that's without the optional $4,000 wheels.

What's good

"Mission: Iconic Reefs:" NOAA has launched a $100 million project to restore seven major coral reef sites in the Florida Keys to fix years of damage from heat-induced coral bleaching amplified by climate change.
