I read Anxious People — my first Backman book — at the end of 2020, which felt like perfect timing. On its surface, it's a goofy book about a bank robbery gone horribly wrong, but not in the way where anyone gets hurt. Because in Backman's world, we're all already hurting...and that's okay. As we get to know a group of strangers who have been accidentally held hostage by a failed bank robber, their backstories, insecurities, hopes, dreams, and heartbreaks are all slowly revealed. They each harbor their own unique darkness, which spills out into the light only because of the shared experience they're going through.
It's a deeply empathetic (and yet funny!) look at humanity; a reminder that everyone you meet is tackling something and that a little kindness can go a long way. It's easy — too easy — to see yourself in the flawed characters, who are merely stumbling through the world, trying their best. They remind us that it's okay to not be okay. And, to me, that's a message that feels more relevant than ever. This is a perfect read for when you need to rekindle a spark of hope, or if you just want something warm and cozy to read as the weather turns cold. Either way, this touching book is worth picking up. Get your copy now. —Kirby Beaton More From BuzzFeed |
