SIGN UP A few years ago, WIRED reporter Robbie Gonzalez published a video about the world's fastest solvers of the Rubik's Cube. Then he decided to solve the classic puzzle himself. Robbie spent an hour with Tyson Mao, a cofounder of the World Cube Association, learning his go-to beginner's method. He started by memorizing a handful of algorithms—cuber lingo for defined sequences of moves known to advance a cube closer to its solved state. He practiced them every day, focusing on speed and precision. His first time solving the cube on his own took him more than 20 minutes. But by day three he was clocking in under four minutes. Within a fortnight his average solve time was below 60 seconds. Since sharing is caring, Robbie wrote a visual manual to walk you through the same solving method that Mao taught him.
