Greetings, Quicktake readers! This week, the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act is now the law in the U.S. Plus: How do you mine cryptocurrency? Stream now for free.

Anti-Asian hate crimes bill becomes law

President Joe Biden signed legislation Thursday to curb the spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders during the Covid pandemic, pledging the U.S. would "step up" enforcement against such attacks.

"Every time we're silent, every time we let hate flourish, we make a lie of who we are as a nation."

The law directs the Justice Department to expedite a review of coronavirus-related hate crimes. It also funds grants for states to establish hotlines to report such incidents and instructs the federal government to help local law enforcement publicly report anti-Asian crimes.

It passed both the House and Senate with large bipartisan support.

Anti-Asian hate crimes reported to police throughout the U.S. rose 169% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period a year prior, according to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University San Bernardino.

What to watch if

...you're vaccinated but still masking. Scientists are pushing for an overhaul of ventilation systems in the U.S. after the CDC and WHO came to accept that the coronavirus can spread through the air.

...the pandemic made you homesick. For the first time since WWII, more Aussies are returning home than leaving, including bankers exiting major financial hubs for Down Under, where Covid has been well contained.

...you think global, act local. Residents of Simris, Sweden, are using locally produced renewable energy stored in freezer-sized batteries in their homes in an experiment that could be key to the future of clean energy.

One question, answered

How do you mine Bitcoin? It's not the same as gold. Crypto mining, the process of verifying transactions and adding them to the blockchain, uses special equipment, a lot of electricity and is essentially a complex math problem that gets harder as more people compete for each new coin.

We want to know

Are vaccine perks working? New York became the most recent state to offer a lottery prize for getting a Covid shot, teasing a $5 million maximum payout. It follows Maryland and Ohio, which are giving residents a chance at $2 million and $1 million, respectively.

The U.S. is approaching having 40% of the population fully vaccinated, but the proportion varies widely from state to state, indicating protection alone isn't enough to overcome vaccine hesitancy.

Tell us: Are you convinced vaccine incentives are a good idea?
