1. Red alert sounded in Kerala, heavy rains likely today, tomorrowAuthorities have sounded red alert in three districts of Kerala on May 14 and five districts on May 15, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rains under the influence of a low pressure area over the Arabian Sea. In a tweet, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked authorities and people to follow the guidelines issued by the state disaster management authority. 2. Modi to release 8th installment of PM-KISAN benefitsPrime Minister Narendra Modi will release the eighth installment of the financial benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme today via video-conferencing. Over Rs. 19,000 crore to more than 9.5 crore beneficiary farmer families will be transferred, the Prime Minister's Office said, adding that Mr. Modi will also interact with the beneficiaries during the event. 3. Portals of Yamunotri, Gangotri to open without devoteesThe Chardham Yatra will have a lacklustre opening for the second consecutive year due to COVID-19 pandemic as the portals of Yamunotri and Gangotri will open on Friday and Saturday respectively without any pilgrims in attendance. 4. Arunachal Pradesh to relaunch tele-consultation facility at TRIHMSTo help people in getting medical consultation from their homes, the Arunachal Pradesh government is re-launching the tele-consultation facility at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) with extended timing, starting today. 5. Jharkhand to start free COVID-19 vaccination for 18-44 age group from todayArmed with 6.48 lakh vaccine doses, Jharkhand on Thursday said it was all geared up to kickstart free vaccination campaign for the 18 to 44 age group from Friday. Facing vaccine shortage, the State could not launch the drive on scheduled May 1. 6. In the U.S., fully vaccinated people not required to wear masksIn the biggest indication that the United States is fast returning to pre-pandemic life, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said fully vaccinated people are no longer required to wear masks. The recommendation holds true for both indoors and outdoors, the CDC said. 7. COVID-19 | U.S. deaths hit lowest level in 10 monthsCOVID-19 deaths in the U.S. have tumbled to an average of around 600 per day — the lowest level in 10 months — with the number of lives lost dropping to single digits in well over half the states and hitting zero on some days. Confirmed infections, meanwhile, have fallen to about 38,000 per day on average, their lowest mark since mid-September. While that is still cause for concern, they have plummeted 85% from a peak of more than a quarter-million cases per day in early January. 8. Israel bombards Gaza with more air strikesIsrael bombarded Gaza with artillery and air strikes on Friday in response to a new barrage of rocket fire from the Hamas-run enclave, in an intensification of a conflict that has now claimed more than 100 Palestinian lives. Days of deadly violence have seen Israeli soldiers massing on the edge of the territory, although the army stressed there had been no ground incursion despite an earlier statement that troops were carrying out an attack "in the Gaza Strip". 9. Oli reappointed Nepal PM as Opposition fails to muster majority to form new govt.K.P. Sharma Oli, in his capacity as leader of the largest political party in Nepal's Parliament, was reappointed as Prime Minister on Thursday after the Opposition parties, riddled by factionalism, failed to secure majority seats in the House to form a new government. President Bhandari will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Oli at a ceremony at Shital Niwas today. 10. Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developmentsIndia recorded 3,28,435 new COVID-19 cases on May 13. As many as 3,700 new deaths were also registered. The country has so far reported a total of 2,40,05,310 cases and 2,61,895 deaths.
