1. New curbs in Maharashtra

While ruling out a stringent lockdown, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government on Sunday tightened restrictions further by announcing a night curfew and weekend lockdown across the State in the wake of the relentless surge in COVID-19 cases. The fresh norms, which come into effect today, include a curfew from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Monday to Friday), a ban on gatherings of five or more persons throughout the day, and, in a determined bid to prevent gatherings, a closure of malls, restaurants and bars.

2. Rajasthan announces fresh COVID-19 norms, night curfew from today

In a bid to tackle the spike in coronavirus cases, the Rajasthan government imposed a night curfew and ordered the closure of multiplexes and gymnasiums besides suspending Classes 1 to 9 at schools from April 5 to 19, a statement said.

3. Chhattisgarh Naxal attack: Wreath-laying ceremony today

A day after the encounter between central paramilitary forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Sukma, bodies of 22 personnel were recovered on Sunday; one commando was still missing, Chattisgarh police said. Thirty-one others were injured. All the 22 bodies were taken to Bijapur where medical formalities would be completed followed by a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday.

4. Supreme Court to name judge for trial of coal scam cases

The Supreme Court is scheduled to decide on Monday the name of the judicial officer who would replace special judge Bharat Parashar to conduct trials in the sensational coal scam cases pending since 2014.

5. Congress workers to stage agitation in Odisha to protest rise in power tariff

Power tariff was raised by 20 paise per unit in October, and a further hike of 30 paise per unit in April has affected the common people, leaving them helpless amid the economic crisis triggered by the pandemic, State Congress president Nairanjan Patnaik said. Congress workers will stage agitation in all the district and block headquarters over the issue today.

6. Rakesh Tikait to visit Sabarmati Ashram

Tikait, who reached Gujarat to drum up support for the farmers' stir, began his two-day visit by praying at the Ambaji Temple in Banaskantha district and then addressing groups in Ambaji and Palanpur. He will visit Sabarmati Ashram today and go to Bardoli on the second day of his Gujarat visit.

7. Indian football team going all-out in preparation for Uzbekistan friendly: coach

Travelling to Uzbekistan well ahead of the two friendly matches was a right decision since the conditions are in complete contrast to what they experienced back home says India women's football head coach Maymol Rocky. The team is set to play two friendlies — against hosts Uzbekistan on Monday and Belarus on Thursday — on their tour of the central Asian country.

8. Coronavirus |Latest numbers and developments

The number of positive coronavirus cases India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 81,182, taking the tally in the country to 1,25,82,632, at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 1,66,477.
