Biden takes action on gunsPresident Joe Biden announced a half-dozen executive actions Thursday to combat the "epidemic" and "international embarrassment" of gun violence in America during a speech in the Rose Garden. Among them are measures that would stop the spread of so-called ghost guns, homemade firearms that are assembled from kits and unable to be traced by police. Another would tighten regulations on pistol-stabilizing braces that effectively turn the gun into a short-barreled rifle. The new orders fulfill his pledge to take immediate "common-sense" steps to address gun violence after shootings last month in Colorado and Georgia but also reflect what limited power the president has to regulate firearms without action on Capitol Hill. He once again called on the Senate to take up House-passed measures to close background check loopholes, insisting that action against gun violence "is not a partisan issue" and said everything he proposed "is totally consistent with the Second Amendment." Biden also directed the Justice Department to publish model "red flag" legislation for states that would allow individuals to petition courts to take away firearms from people who present a danger to themselves or others.
