Uttarakhand glacier disaster Though the jury is still out, glaciologists and experts in rock sciences are converging around the view that the cause of the Chamoli deluge was most probably a landslip and not a glacial lake burst. 4. First phase of Andhra Pradesh Panchayat polls today District Collector and District Election Authority Vivek Yadav has said that all arrangements have been completed for a peaceful polling to elect sarpanches in 270 gram panchayats and 2,105 ward members in 18 mandals across the Tenali revenue division. WHO team probing COVID-19 origins in China to brief media Scientists on a World Health Organization-sponsored mission to shed light on the explosive spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Wuhan will brief journalists on their findings later on Tuesday. 8. Trump impeachment trial opens today Lawyers for Donald Trump on Monday dubbed the impeachment case against him an act of “political theater” by Democrats, whom they accused of exploiting for their own party's gain the chaos and trauma of last month's riot at the U.S. Capitol. In a brief filed on the eve of the Senate impeachment trial, lawyers for the former president attacked the case on multiple grounds, foreshadowing legal and constitutional arguments they intend to present when the trial opens in earnest on Tuesday. 9. India vs. England first Test in Chennai — Day 5 India were left with the herculean task of chasing a world record 420 after England refused to declare in an unfocussed second essay, cut short by Ravichandran Ashwin's brilliance on a sharply turning fourth day strip in the opening Test here on Monday.
