(The Editor's Pick is a new newsletter from The Hindu that provides a snapshot of the most important stories from today's edition of our newspaper, along with a note from our top editors on why we chose to give prominence to these stories.) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has informed Lok Sabha that China has deployed massive amounts of troops and armaments along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. He conveyed that there were several points in the region where Indian troops were facing off with the Chinese. He also claimed that in the Galwan clash of June 15 that killed 20 Indian soldiers, heavy casualties were inflicted on the Chinese side also. Mr. Singh's statement made clear that the stand-off has grown significantly in scale since the Galwan clash. He also spoke of how China's stance is in violation of several bilateral agreements regarding the border. The statement also detailed both Mr. Singh's own and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's negotiations with their Chinese counterparts to find a solution. These are the highest-level diplomatic parleys the country has handled in a while. Mr. Singh's statement in Parliament is the most detailed report to the Indian public so far on the scale and import of the border situation. This, coupled with the government's denial of the opposition's demand for a discussion on the issue citing national security concerns, is what makes this story important. |
