1) Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developments
The number of positive coronavirus cases reported from India now stands at 24,59,466 at the time of publishing this newsletter. The toll from the disease stands at 48,150.
2) President's address to the nation on eve of Independence Day
The address will be broadcast from 7 p.m. onwards on the entire national network of All India Radio and over all Doordarshan channels in Hindi, followed by the English version.
3) Rajasthan political crisis | Assembly session begins today
The BJP said it will move a no-confidence motion against the Ashok Gehlot government in the session. Hours later, the Congress Legislature Party met and announced that it would seek a confidence vote to prove its majority. Mr. Gehlot and Sachin Pilot met after a month. 4) Rajasthan political crisis | High Court to resume hearing on BSP MLAs case today
On being told that the Rajasthan High Court is scheduled to hear the case on Friday, a Supreme Court bench said on Thursday, "We are not passing any interim orders. Any transaction that takes place (in the Assembly) will obviously be subject to the court's order."
5) Coronavirus | Supreme Court to hear plea on COVID-19 'mismanagement' by Centre
The Supreme Court on Friday will hear a writ petition filed by six former bureaucrats, represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking a Commission of Inquiry to be set up into the "gross mismanagement" of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by the government.
6) Prashant Bhushant contempt case | Supreme Court to pronounce judgment
A three-judge Bench led by Justice Arun Mishra is scheduled to pronounce its judgment today in a suo motu contempt case against noted civil rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan for his tweet on a photograph of Chief Justice Sharad A. 7) China extends anti-dumping duties on optical fibres from India
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said the latest ruling will take effect from Friday.
8) Country braces for more rain in next 2-3 days
Heavy rain likely in Odisha, warning of flood-like situation; season's heaviest showers in Delhi; heavy downpour lashed parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas; very heavy rain likely in 8 M.P. districts; orange alert issued. 10) CRPF to launch organ donation drive
The voluntary mission will culminate on the national organ donation day on November 27 and has been planned keeping in mind the spirit of "serving the nation even after death".
11) Puzzling New Zealand virus outbreak grows to 17 cases
The government is due to make a decision Friday on whether to extend Auckland's lockdown, which seems increasingly likely given the new cases.
12) Documentary on ICC Women's T20 WC to be released today
The documentary is part of the 100% Cricket project launched by the ICC, hours before the ICC Women's T20 World Cup final, played on International Women's Day in front of a record 86,174 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
