California retreats from reopening amid virus surge

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: Naya Rivera found dead in California lake, White House seeks to discredit Fauci as Trump touts bond, and after 87 years, Washington sheds the Redskins.

California shuts down again

California officials declared a sweeping rollback of newly reopened businesses on Monday amid a surge of Covid-19—that's also reinvading other states that had seemingly beaten the virus back.

Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the closure of all indoor and outdoor services at bars, restaurants, wineries, breweries, and movie theaters to control the spread of Covid-19. Gyms, churches, and salons must also shut down in Sacramento, Santa Barbara, San Benito, and San Diego counties.

Over the past two weeks, the state has reported 109,910 new cases and 1,104 new deaths, out of a total of 329,162 infections and 7,040 deaths. Hospitalizations have also increased by 28% from the previous two weeks.

On Monday, Los Angeles and San Diego said they would start the school year offering only online classes, defying calls by the Trump administration for classrooms to fully reopen. "The health and safety of all in the school community is not something we can compromise," said the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Newsom applauded "the leadership of those districts for leaning in and recognizing their responsibility at this moment."

More:

  • Vice President Pence told U.S. governors Monday that the White House would back them on any measures to contain the virus, pledging "our full support on the steps you deem necessary within your states," Pence said. "I am a phone call away."

$ignificant figures

33. The age of former "Glee" star Naya Rivera, who was confirmed dead after officials said they were "confident" a body found near the surface of Lake Piru in Southern California was the missing actress.

87. After that many years, Washington's NFL team is "retiring the Redskins name and logo," the team announced, bowing to pressure from sponsors and decades of criticism over the offensive term for Native Americans.

$2.4 billion. With Tesla's stock on a seemingly unstoppable rise, Elon Musk is days away from collecting the second tranche of the boldest pay package in corporate history that would unlock 1.69 million stock options.

Highly quotable

"Good relationship." Trump downplayed his rift with Fauci, who's been increasingly undercut by his administration, marking a notable shift after a White House official circulated a dossier to discredit the top doctor.

"Completely unlawful." The White House rejected China's expansive claims in the South China Sea and decried a "campaign of bullying" over resources, reversing an earlier "freedom of navigation" policy in the region.

"Demonstrated ability to evade detection." Ghislaine Maxwell hid from the FBI and wrapped her cell phone in tin foil to avoid being tracked, U.S. prosecutors said in a court filing Monday, seeking to keep her locked up.

This is not normal

Lethal weeds. An aggressive species of seaweed is killing large swaths of coral on once-pristine reefs and spreading like a tumbleweed in Hawaii, smothering reefs in thick vegetation that competes for nutrients and sun.

The future is now

Safer surgery. To minimize the risk of treating Covid-19, U.K. doctors are wearing mixed reality headsets that employ augmented reality to insert digital graphics like scans and X-rays into a doctor's real-world view.

What's good

Closing the gap. A record 632 women are running for Congress this year, a 20% increase over the 2018 midterm elections, adding to the advances female candidates made that helped reshape the makeup of Congress.
