Despite a shockingly positive jobs report this morning, it's been a difficult week in the U.S., to put it mildly.
Amid the pain, sorrow and anger, one thing has become abundantly clear: companies, and their leaders, cannot remain silent. Apple's Tim Cook was one of the first tech CEOs to come out this week with an unequivocal message: "we must do more," speaking out against racism, and meaningfully focusing on diversity and inclusion. Ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's may now be owned by consumer giant Unilever, but they still speak with an independent and provocative voice; they came out swinging with a powerful statement. Former Xerox CEO Ursula Burns (the first African American CEO of a Fortune 500 company) focused less on policies, and more on the make up of corporate leadership in the boardroom: "Before you even look at the companies, look at the boards. Most of the boards still have zero or one African American on board, and that, I think that pressure in that area, can help to speed up progress and transitions for companies."
There's still no consensus when it comes to bringing workers back to their offices. CNN has already said most employees won't return to the office in 2020, while Goldman Sachs is now bringing traders back to the floor in New York and London. NYSE already opened up the floor for some traders. E-commerce brand Shopify is embracing remote work; CEO Tobi Lutke says the company is now digital by default. Offices will not only remain closed this calendar year, but most employees will be remote permanently. He says "office centricity is over." Programming note: Shopify's Solmaz Shahalizadeh will be speaking on one of our CNBC @Work Spotlight panels on June 18. More on how major companies are dealing with their workforces.
