Seattle's no-police neighborhood Hundreds of protesters in Seattle have laid claim to several city blocks and transformed it into the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, or "CHAZ," hoping to demonstrate what a community can look like without police. The zone surrounds the Seattle Police Department's East Precinct, which had been the site of violent clashes between Black Lives Matter protesters and police, who abandoned the area earlier this week over safety fears. Protesters reversed the barricades and have occupied the neighborhood ever since, creating a festival-like scene complete with film screenings, music and poetry performances, street fair vendors, and a "no cop co-op." In addition to police reform, protesters are calling for racial justice and compensation for Native groups who settled there before Seattle was founded. They've also made demands to abolish prisons and allow communities to create local anti-crime systems. Trump labeled the protesters "domestic terrorists" and called on Seattle officials to "take back your city now," saying, "these ugly anarchists must be stopped."
