Trump urges reopening at any cost

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: China aims fury at Pompeo, doctors spot dangerous new virus threat, and evidence emerges showing ancient rivers on Mars.

Trump pushes toward reopening

President Trump declared Tuesday that the U.S. must begin to reopen its economy immediately, even if it means more Americans get sick and die from the coronavirus outbreak. Speaking with Native American leaders in Phoenix, Trump said that "some people will be affected badly, but I created the greatest economy in the history of the world. Now, it's time to open up."

Trump also confirmed that the White House would disband its coronavirus task force as he visited a Honeywell plant that has been making N95 respirators. He toured the factory wearing safety goggles but no mask. Earlier, Vice President Pence suggested the task force had met its goal of slowing the U.S. outbreak, the world's largest with more than 1.2 million cases and more than 70,000 deaths.

Health officials have warned that the U.S. could see an uptick in cases and deaths as states allow businesses to reopen and people to venture out.

More:

  • 69% of Americans are "somewhat" or "very" worried that they or someone they know will contract the virus, a poll found.
  • The coronavirus-sparked recession has put more than 30 million Americans out of work and hurt Trump's reelection chances.

$ignificant figures

29,427. The U.K.'s virus death toll surpassed Italy's, making it Europe's worst-hit country, second only to the U.S., but Dominic Raab dismissed any comparisons as countries may not be "measuring the same way."

40 million. Governments in Europe's six biggest economies have spent €100 billion to protect that many furloughed workers during virus shutdowns, warding off the huge blow of surging unemployment

0.1%. Qatar and Singapore, two of the world's wealthiest nations, have the lowest Covid-19 fatality rates among countries with major outbreaks, as the global death toll exceeds 256,000.

Highly quotable

"Spitting poison." Chinese state media lashed out at Mike Pompeo, calling him "evil" and a liar, as Beijing sought to push back against the U.S.'s allegations that the virus originated in a Wuhan lab.

"Covid toe." Coronavirus may cause blood clots and benign skin lesions on the feet even after respiratory symptoms end, doctors said, calling the finding "the most important thing that's emerged over the last month."

"Culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice." Barack Obama will give a televised prime-time commencement address for the Class of 2020 in an event also featuring LeBron James, Malala Yousafzai and Ben Platt.

This is not normal

Too hot to handle. Barring a dramatic drop in greenhouse gas emissions, 3.5 billion people, mostly the poor, are projected to suffer nearly unlivable heat by 2070 in conditions currently only seen in the Sahara Dessert.

The future is now

Reading the rocks. New images of exposed cliffs on Mars reveal the first evidence of rivers that existed for more than 100,000 years on the Martian surface 3.7 billion years ago, according to a new study.

What's good

Looking out for each other. Wealthy residents in Kenya are temporarily "adopting" families living in impoverished areas, sending money, groceries and vital supplies after the lockdown caused many to lose their jobs.
