Could a century-old vaccine fight Covid-19?

QuickTake Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: Pentagon desperately seeking body bags, U.S. alleges China hid its outbreak, and a $75K-journey to the deepest point on Earth.

TB vaccine tested on Covid-19

A tuberculosis vaccine that's been around for about 100 years is being given to health-care workers in Australia to test whether it can ward off coronavirus and, perhaps, prevent infections from it altogether. Scientists say the bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) shot, which is used to immunize some 130 million newborns worldwide each year, may rev up the body's immune system to better defend against a broad range of infections from viruses and bacteria. And with a vaccine specifically targeted against Covid-19 at least a year away, it may prove the best short-term weapon for high-risk workers on the front lines of the virus fight.

$ignificant figures

10%. The share of the global GDP needed to counter the financial impacts of coronavirus that threatens to push 11 million people in East Asia and 8.3 million in the Arab region into poverty, the UN and World Bank said.

2,700. More than half of the crew aboard the virus-stricken USS Theodore Roosevelt will disembark and enter quarantine in Guam after a Navy captain issued a dramatic plea to evacuate the aircraft carrier.

100,000. The Pentagon is seeking to provide FEMA with that many military-style body bags for potential civilian use after the U.S. warned as many as 200,000 Americans could die in the coronavirus outbreak.

Highly quotable

"We could have been better off." U.S. intelligence officials alleged China underreported virus cases and deaths and was dealing with a full-blown outbreak "as much as a month" before the world learned of it in December.

"Most serious science policy failure in a generation." Boris Johnson faced criticism for failing to speed up coronavirus testing amid a 31% spike in U.K. deaths. He later pledged to "significantly" increase testing.

"Devastated." What eight-time Wimbledon champ Roger Federer tweeted after the tournament was canceled for the first time since WWII due to the virus and rescheduled for June 2021.

This is not normal

Outlook hazy. Covid-19 could obscure accurate weather forecasts, which are critical for commodities markets, climate scientists said, warning that lengthy lockdowns may impact satellite and weather-station upkeep.

The future is now

Deep expedition. In a world-first, a diving company is offering submarine trips seven miles below sea level to the Marianas Trench, the deepest point on Earth, that's had fewer visitors than the ISS. The cost? $750,000.

What's good

Moving in. A tribe of normally secluded, yet curious Kashmiri mountain goats is taking over the Welsh town of Llandudno, roaming the streets, climbing walls and chewing through plants, as humans retreat indoors.
