Here’s what you need to know about what’s happening today: 1) Coronavirus update | The lockdown continues A total of 30 states and Union Territories covering 548 districts have announced complete lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus, the government said on Monday. 2) Coronavirus | TN announces lockdown; district borders to be shut to combat COVID-19 Tamil Nadu will be under a lockdown till March 31 from 6 PM on Tuesday to prevent the spread of coronavirus and CrPC section 144 will be invoked, Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced. 3) Postponement of Tokyo Olympics One of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) longest-serving members, Dick Pound on Monday said that it has been decided that the Tokyo Olympics will be postponed. 4) Domestic commercial air ops to cease from Tuesday midnight The operations of domestic scheduled commercial airlines will cease with effect from the midnight of Tuesday in view of the coronavirus scare, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said. 5) Coronavirus | Kerala High Court closed till April 8 The Kerala High Court on Monday decided to close down till April 8, in order to prevent the spread of COVID—19. However, the court will open every Tuesday and Friday till then. 6) Noida | Nearly 2,000 challans amid lockdown, top cop warns action against Section 144 violators Nearly 2,000 challans and penalties were issued on Monday against those violating Section 144 on the first day of the lockdown due to coronavirus in Gautam Buddh Nagar, police said and appealed to the residents to strictly adhere to the orders and stay indoors. 7) Coronavirus | Courts in Delhi restrict functioning, only urgent matters to be heard virtually Amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus, the courts in the national capital have virtually gone into shutdown as the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court on Monday decided to hear only matters of "extreme urgency" through video-conferencing. 8) Coronavirus | 4,329 people under observation in Jammu and Kashmir The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Monday said 4,329 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been put under observation and four people have tested positive for coronavirus so far in the Union Territory. 9) Coronavirus | Death toll rises to 9 The death toll due to the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to nine on Monday after West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh reported a casualty each, while the number of confirmed cases soared to 476, the Union Health Ministry said. The number of active COVID-19 cases are 443, while nine have died. 10) Coronavirus | Hong Kong bars non-residents, limits alcohol over virus Hong Kong will ban all non-residents from entering the financial hub from midnight on Tuesday evening in a bid to halt the coronavirus, its leader said Monday. 11) Coronavirus | AIIMS closes all OPD services The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) closed its Out Patient Department (OPD) services here and all centres from Tuesday as part of measures to contain coronavirus. The AIIMS notified in a letter addressed to chiefs of all centres and heads of all clinical departments and other officials that all OPD services, including specialty services, will be closed for patients from March 24 till further orders. 12) Coronavirus | IMF warns COVID-19 recession could be worse than 2009 The world economy is facing “severe” economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic that could be even more costly than in 2009 and will require an unprecedented response, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said Monday. 13) Govt. stops incoming passengers on 107 immigration check points The Centre on Monday night decided to stop all incoming passengers on 107 immigration check points that include all airports, seaports, land ports, rail ports and river ports. In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said the decision has been taken in view of the coronavirus outbreak. 14) RBI to infuse Rs 1 lakh cr via repo ops In another move to ensure adequate liquidity in the system, the Reserve Bank of India on Monday announced to conduct term repo operations of Rs 1 lakh crore in two equal tranches on March 23 and March 24.
