The deep impeachment divide

QuickTake Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: India protests rage on, Boeing halts the 737 Max and Sydney smoke declared an emergency.

Voters still split on impeachment

The impeachment drama that's engulfed Washington over the past month has done little to change Americans' opinions about whether President Trump should remain in office, according to two new polls. A Fox News survey found 50% think Trump should be impeached and removed from office with 41% opposed. In a separate CBS poll, 46% said Trump deserved to be impeached for his dealings with Ukraine and 42% said the Senate should not convict him or hold a trial. A vote is expected by the full House of Representatives on Wednesday with a likely Senate trial to begin in January.

$ignificant figurest

1.3%. The rate that economists forecast Hong Kong's GDP to decline by the end of 2019 as unrest from the months of anti-government protests hit tourism and retail sales.

12,000 workers. Boeing will temporarily halt production of the grounded 737 Max jet in January, but no layoffs are expected at the Seattle plant where they're assembled.

45 million. How many times Mariah Carey's 1994 hit song "All I Want For Christmas" was streamed last week, pushing it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time.

Highly quotable

"Betrayed the nation." The House Judiciary Committee released a 169-page impeachment report, arguing Trump poses "a threat to the Constitution" if he remains in office.

"No Indian has anything to worry." India PM Narendra Modi urged calm after dozens were injured on the fifth day of protests against a controversial citizenship law.

"Wrong decision." The Hallmark Channel said it will reinstate four TV ads for Zola showing lesbian brides kiss after the decision to pull it prompted instant backlash.

This is not normal

Unprecedented haze. Health groups in Australia declared the wildfire smoke blanketing Sydney a "public health emergency" after air pollution levels reached 11 times higher than the threshold for "hazardous."

The future is now

Mind control. A neurotech startup unveiled the world's first brain-sensing wearable that lets users control their devices with just their thoughts by instantly translating brain signals into digital commands.

What's good

Sharp decoration. Security personnel at Lithuania's Vilnius airport built a contraband Christmas tree out of knives, scissors, lighters, blades and other prohibited items confiscated from travelers throughout the year.
