House gets set to impeach Trump ... and pass his trade deal
EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello,
This is CNBC.com politics reporter Jacob Pramuk, in for Mike Calia.
Congress is rushing to finish its end of the year work before lawmakers bolt for the holidays. Even by the standards of President Trump's Washington, the coming week has shaped up as a remarkable one.
Trump will likely become only the third U.S. president impeached by the House of Representatives. House Speaker Pelosi has reached the historic moment with nearly all Democrats on board— for better or worse for members vulnerable in the 2020 election.
But Pelosi also aims to show she can play nice with the president. Democrats hope to ratify the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the president's replacement for NAFTA, this week. If the House passes the deal, Trump gets a little more 2020 campaign fodder, fresh off the White House's phase one trade deal with China.
Congress also needs to pass spending bills by Friday to dodge a government shutdown. Top Republicans and Democrats appear to be on track to keep the government running — as long as Trump backs a tentative deal.
Meanwhile, the Democrats hoping to take the president's seat in the Oval Office will share the debate stage again on Thursday, if a labor dispute at the event site gets resolved. Ahead of the next debate, one of the top 2020 contenders Elizabeth Warren spoke to CNBC's John Harwood about her economic vision that has rankled titans of the business world.
