Hate crime charges in Hanukkah ambush

QuickTake Tonight

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: Tokyo's Olympic-primed tech, how Netflix won the decade, and Australia's bushfires are spawning their own thunderstorms.

Hate crime charges in NY stabbing

Federal prosecutors filed hate crime charges against the suspect accused of stabbing five people during a Hanukkah celebration over the weekend. Grafton Thomas, 37, faces five counts of "obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by attempting to kill with a dangerous weapon and causing injuries." Authorities arrested him on Saturday after he allegedly fled the scene of the ambush at a rabbi's home in Monsey, New York. A blood-stained machete was found in his car, police said, and anti-Semitic writings and drawings were found in his home. Grafton's family said he has a long history of mental illness and no prior convictions, his attorney said.

More:

  • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the deadly attack an act of domestic terrorism and a "cancer" of growing hatred in America.
  • New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said some Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn would see an increase in police presence.

  • Sen. Chuck Schumer announced a plan to increase federal funding to protect houses of worship and prevent hate crimes

$ignificant figures

4,100%. Netflix shares have soared by that much since the end of 2009 as it led the industry-wide shift to streaming video, making the tech giant the S&P 500's biggest gainer of the decade.

3 years. Chinese scientist He Jiankui, who drew global backlash after claiming to create the world's first gene-edited babies last year, was sentenced to that many years in prison and handed a 3-million yuan ($430,000) fine and a lifelong ban from working in reproductive technology.

328 million. The current population of the United States after growing by almost half a percent from 2018 to 2019, the slowest growth rate in a century due to declining births and the slowdown of international migration.

Highly quotable

"I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now." Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, 79, announced he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, saying he's been "in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life."

"She is happy, but I worry." Greta Thunberg's father said his daughter "is in a very good place" since becoming a climate activist, although he was "not supportive" of her skipping school to strike.

"Don't shut me out of the hive." Actress Sharon Stone tweeted that Bumble kicked her off its dating app after several users complained that her profile was fake.

This is not normal

Too late to evacuate? In southeastern Australia, thousands of people were ordered to take shelter and hundreds of firefighters were removed from areas deemed too dangerous as devastating bushfires continue to rip through the region, growing big enough to generate their own weather.

The future is now

Transformative tech. Tokyo is due to debut a bevy of cutting-edge tech at the 2020 Summer Olympics, including 200 service robots to aid people with disabilities, AI-powered vehicles to transport athletes and self-ventilating hats to help visitors cope with the heat.

What's good

Fascinating find. Archaeologists in Mexico discovered the ruins of an ancient Mayan palace dating back more than 1,000 years just outside modern-day Cancùn. Among the findings were an altar, oven, pottery and murals—and scientists say they've only scratched the surface.
