Trump visits North Korea, and Mayor Pete hits it big
EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello readers,
Welcome to the short holiday work week as the nation will celebrate its birthday on the Fourth of July.
It was an eventful weekend in the world of politics. President Trump didn't take too long in snagging back the spotlight from the 2020 Democratic contenders on the heels of their debates last week. He pushed the pause button, yet again, in his trade battle with China. Then Trump made an even bigger splash with his quick meeting with North Korea dictator Kim Jong Un in the DMZ, becoming the first sitting American president to set foot on North Korean soil. His supporters lauded the move as a bold step for peace with a hostile regime. His critics accused him of legitimizing a murderous tyrant without extracting any real concessions.
Back in the states, the 2020 Democratic field finished the second quarter fundraising period with a bang. Pete Buttigieg was first on the scoreboard with his big $24.8 million total. It helps show that the South Bend mayor is a legitimate player in the race. Kamala Harris seized on her widely praised debate performance by raising $2 million in 24 hours, setting her up for a good second quarter haul, too. Other candidates should be reporting their numbers in the coming days.
We hope you enjoy the holiday this week. Don't work too hard.
