YouTube’s hate speech flip-flop

TicToc Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, TicToc readers! Wednesday's almost over. Here's what's happening:

But first...

YouTube is banning extremist videos

YouTube tightened its hate speech policy to ban videos that glorify Nazi ideology or deny events like the Holocaust took place. The move was undercut by controversy over videos from conservative comedian Steven Crowder, who made homophobic and racist jokes about Vox journalist Carlos Maza. YouTube initially said they didn't violate its policies. That prompted some Google employees to protest the decision, and YouTube later suspended the account.

More:

  • YouTube's new ban applies to all videos "alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination," the company said in a blog post. Channels in violation won't be able to run ads.

  • The ban is expected to result in the removal of thousands of channels and videos across YouTube.
