The NEW millennial playbook
EDITOR'S NOTE
Last year on Closing Bell, while I was pregnant with my son, Mike Santoli and I were chit-chatting about some upcoming earnings reports.
"By the way," I said, "what exactly is Carter's??" I knew it was a retailer of some sort, but we'd never covered it in any detail. He laughed. "You'll find out soon enough," he cracked.
Have I ever!! I was thinking about that this morning as I dug through a drawerful of Carter's clothing to get my son dressed. I also just ordered another five-pack of their onesies on Amazon, because he outgrows each set so fast. Not to mention our recent emergency stop by Carter's in the mall the other day after he soiled himself and wound up shirtless because, of course, I didn't have an extra top on hand.
So I know all about Carter's now. Which got me thinking about how much my spending habits have changed over the last five years. 2014: Eating anywhere but my rented apartment (coffeeshop for breakfast, Chipotle for lunch...); relying on Uber to get around; and crashing on my grandpa's pullout couch watching five hours of "Say Yes to the Dress" on Friday nights.
2019: Attempting to cook meals at home while using any toy (why did Babies 'R' Us have to go bankrupt?!) or other means possible to keep my son from trying to climb the stairs, open the toilet lid, empty the mini fridge of Snapples, or stick his fingers in a door hinge at the same time. Throwing him in the Subaru every time I realize I'm out of milk again or broke another sippy cup.
This is why I love Bill Smead's stock picks, which basically extrapolate my own life experience across millions of other millennials who are in or on the cusp of being in the same boat. Think of the homebuilders (hello, housing shortage), or Discovery (owner of HGTV and the forthcoming, no joke, "Say Yes to the Nest").
Now, that's not to say it's a foolproof investment theme, but it certainly rings true to my life. And we actually have Bill on the show today, but I'll spare everyone the personal stories. There's plenty of real news to discuss!
See you then, and have a great weekend,
Kelly
