Read this if: You've been feeling a bit ~blue~ lately. Credit: @doyoueverjustread Bluets by Maggie Nelson
Originally published in 2009, Bluets is a series of meditations on all things blue. Though it may sound like a limiting topic, Nelson talks about the color blue in ways that I didn't think were possible. Part love letter to the color, part love letter to an actual former lover, Nelson creates an expansive world, laced with blue, in which she explores the themes of god, sex, love, and loneliness. Nelson's work has been described as "genre-busting" and has stood the test of time thanks to her original style and universal woes. Her prose is poetic, direct, and unafraid to wade into dark and complex waters. She asks her readers to consider the "blue core" of fire, blue as the color of death, blue as the color of memory, blue as the color of anarchy, and blue as the center of the universe. Nelson braids her prose with history, science and intimate personal anecdotes, reaching deep into her well of knowledge and each time pulling out something dazzling, and often heartbreaking. This series of thoughtful yet explosive vignettes is the kind of book that will have you filling up the margins with some big questions of your own, and force you to (quite literally) see things differently.
