Chaos in Haiti after president slain

The Caribbean nation of Haiti was plunged into chaos this week after its president, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated in a brazen nighttime raid, and acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph declared a state of siege.

Joseph said Moise was murdered by a group of highly trained and heavily armed attackers who stormed the presidential residence in Port-Au-Prince at 1 a.m. Wednesday. First Lady Martine Moise was injured but not killed.

Haitian police on Thursday said they had arrested six people in connection with the pre-dawn attack, including two Haitian Americans. Seven other suspected assailants were killed in a gunfight with police, officials said.

Haiti was without clear leadership Thursday as rival politicians jockeyed to fill the power vacuum left by Moise. His death followed months of violent protests and charges that he used heavy-handed tactics to cling to power.

The country of 11 million is the poorest in the Western hemisphere and has been terrorized by gang violence and kidnappings. It's also the only country that hasn't vaccinated a single resident against Covid-19.

What to watch if

...you can't stop reading about the delta variant. Pfizer plans to request U.S. emergency authorization for a third booster dose of its Covid vaccine, based on data showing it can increase protection against the virus.

...you're still shocked by that laser pen. Increased social mixing at the Euros may be driving more Covid cases in men, says a new study, which found English men were 30% more likely to test positive than women.

...you track Bitcoin in real-time. Billions are pilfered every year in a variety of crypto scams. In Scorsese's cinematic bender of sex, drugs and stocks, it's called the pump and dump. In today's crypto, it's the rug pull.

What's happening with the Olympics? No fans will be allowed at venues in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures, organizers said Thursday after a resurgence of Covid cases pushed Japan to declare a fourth state of emergency in the city through Aug. 22. The games start in two weeks.

Do you want to quit your job? The pandemic and the WFH environment it spawned forced many Americans to question how long they can last in their current role. More than 40% of U.S. employees are considering leaving their jobs this year. In May alone, 3.6 million workers resigned.
