Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy

| FRI, JUL 16, 2021 | | | Hello, I'm Brian Schwartz, CNBC's political finance reporter, filling in for Politics Editor Mike Calia. Thursday was the quarterly campaign finance deadline, and it generated a lot of news and insight. It is rare to see so many campaign money angles during a year between major federal elections, but there were a lot of clues in this week's filings about where things are headed in 2022 and beyond. Here's a look at what CNBC unearthed: - CNBC was first to report that Sen. Joe Manchin's 2024 reelection campaign is getting support from an unlikely place: a political action committee funded by conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The Fox Corp. PAC gave $1,500 to Manchin's campaign, according to a new second quarter disclosure. Fox Corp. is the parent company of Fox News. The PAC has never donated to Manchin's campaigns. The disclosure comes as Manchin, who represents the deep-red state of West Virginia, faces pressure from conservative voices on Fox News and elsewhere to obstruct and limit President Biden and Democratic leaders' ambitious and expensive agenda.
- The Trump factor: GOP Rep. Mo Brooks is the latest member of the GOP to pay Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump's private club, to cater and host a campaign event, another new filing said. Brooks' Senate campaign paid the club a total of more than $25,000 in April and June. Trump endorsed Brooks for the Senate seat in April. Brooks was among more than 100 GOP lawmakers who voted unsuccessfuly to overturn Biden's election victory.
- Battle for the House: Powerful donors across the country are already starting to give to fundraising committees with ties to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The massive donations show that party officials and big-money donors are recognizing the need to heavily fund these campaign committees, with the House being up for grabs next year.
- Empire State intrigue: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been under investigation for most of 2021, including for alleged sexual harassment, but that did not stop a group of wealthy business leaders from donating to his 2022 reelection campaign. Stephen Ross, a billionaire and the chair of real estate giant Related Companies, gave $25,000 to Cuomo, a Democrat, in late June. Ross, who previously raised money for Republican Trump, also owns the Miami Dolphins. Laurance Rockefeller Jr., a member of the ultrawealthy Rockefeller family, gave $10,000. Dennis Arfa, the CEO of Artist Group International, gave $10,000 last month. Arfa is also a longtime agent for music legend Billy Joel. The companies Cablevision of Southern Westchester and Altice also contributed to Cuomo's reelection campaign in July. New state records show that Cuomo's first half fundraising haul ended up being just over $2 million.
