1. Former Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh's funeral today

 

On Saturday, the body of Virbhadra Singh will be kept at Padam Palace from 8 am to 2 pm before the funeral at 3 pm. A delegation of Congress leaders will represent party president Sonia Gandhi at his cremation on Saturday. The delegation will comprise Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and Congress treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal.

2. Jaishankar to visit Georgia on July 9-10: MEA

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will pay a two-day visit to Georgia beginning Friday during which he will hold talks with his counterpart there on various aspects of bilateral relations as well as exchange views on issues of regional and global interest. This will be the first visit of an Indian External Affairs Minister to independent Georgia, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

3. Monsoon likely to reach Delhi today

Monsoon is likely to reach the national capital on Saturday, 13 days after the usual date of June 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. This will be the most-delayed monsoon in Delhi in the last 15 years, according to officials.  "Conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over Delhi; remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh; some more parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan during next 24 hours," the IMD said in a statement.

4. In Mumbai, no COVID-19 vaccination on Saturday too due to dose shortage

 

The COVID-19 vaccination drive will remain suspended at civic and government-run centres in Mumbai on Saturday due to a shortage of doses and no inoculation will take place on Sunday on account of weekly off of staffers, the BMC said on Friday. On Friday, too, the drive remained suspended in BMC and Maharashtra government-run centres in the metropolis due paucity of doses.

5. Monsoon likely to reactivate over Rajasthan from today: IMD

The Southwest Monsoon, which has been sluggish for several days, is expected to become active again over Rajasthan from Saturday, a MeT department official said Friday. The department has forecast good rainfall in the coming days in various parts of the state.  According to the department, Monsoon winds have started setting in some parts of the state from Friday itself.

6. Marriages, funerals to be allowed with limited number across all grades of Delhi's Covid action plan

Marriages and funerals will be permitted in Delhi with a limited number of attendees across all the four grades under the colour-coded action plan approved by authorities on Friday to deal with a possible third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The four colour codes in the increasing severity order - 'Yellow', 'Amber', 'Orange' and 'Red',  based on positivity rate (on two consecutive days), cumulative number of new cases (over a week) and average oxygenated-bed occupancy (for a week) will designate four levels of alerts, officials said.

7. G20 ministers take up plan to deter cross-border tax dodging

Finance ministers from the Group of 20 countries will push for agreement on proposals backed by US President Joe Biden to deter tax dodging by multinational companies. While approval of the sweeping tax package is likely at the G-20 meeting Friday and Saturday in Venice, the proposals still face a key hurdle in the US Congress, where Republicans have vowed to oppose it

8. At Wimbledon, Pliskova seeks 1st Grand Slam title, Barty 2nd

 

Ash Barty will be trying to win a second trophy in her past seven Grand Slam tournaments when she faces Karolina Pliskova at Wimbledon on Saturday. Pliskova seeks her first major championship, five years after losing in her only previous Slam final.

9. Coronavirus | Numbers and developments

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 37 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. Cumulatively, 10,98,62,585 persons in the 18-44 age group have received their first dose and 35,08,932 their second dose since the start of phase-3 of the vaccination drive.

The number of positive coronavirus cases in India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 42,648, taking the tally in the country to 3,07,90,208 at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 4,07,091.
