THE BIG STORY
Biden reinstated transgender healthcare protections that Trump had stripped away
You probably remember when the Trump administration narrowed the definition of gender to only protect against discrimination of sex assigned at birth. The move allowed healthcare discrimination against LGBTQ people.
That limited definition of gender has now been expanded. Transgender people will again be protected by sex discrimination legislation in healthcare after the Biden administration overturned the Trump-era rule.
The previous Trump laws meant that healthcare providers and insurance companies were not punished for discriminating against patients for being transgender.
The change by the Biden administration is a return to discrimination protections in healthcare that were first implemented during the Obama administration.
It's a significant change, and it comes as Republican-led states across the country are attempting to introduce legislation to discriminate against trans people, including banning trans girls from playing in school sports. Getty Images STAYING ON TOP OF THIS
The FDA authorized Pfizer's vaccine for kids ages 12-15
Initially, Pfizer's vaccine was approved for people aged 16 and up. Then in March, the company reported that its two-shot vaccine regimen was 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 after full vaccination, two weeks after the last shot, in younger teens.
Now, federal health officials have authorized emergency use of the vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds, opening eligibility to nearly 17 million school-age kids.
Last week, Pfizer applied for full FDA approval of its shots, which would move them from emergency status to fully licensed status. That move would allow schools and the military to require the shots, instead of keeping their administration strictly voluntary. SNAPSHOTS

NBC won't air the 2022 Golden Globe Awards following criticism of the HFPA's lack of diversity. It's quite a bad week for the HFPA. Netflix, Amazon Studios, and WarnerMedia are boycotting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, saying the organization lacks a diverse lineup in its award recipients. Tom Cruise has also reportedly returned his three Golden Globe trophies.
The DOJ will waive the death penalty for the American who fought with extremists in Ukraine and allegedly killed a Florida couple. Waiving the death penalty for Craig Lang could speed up his extradition from Kyiv, where capital punishment has been off the books for 20 years.

Louisiana bars problem doctors from practicing medicine in most hospitals. So they treat incarcerated people instead.
Doctors who have had their medical licenses revoked or suspended might face certain restrictions when they resume practicing. It's not uncommon for their professional records to prevent them from working in community settings, like hospitals or private practices.
In Louisiana, they have another option: they can become prison physicians. Ten of the Louisiana Department of Corrections' 12 physicians — including six medical directors and two assistant medical directors — have had their medical licenses restricted or suspended.
Several were disciplined for illegally distributing drugs, two committed fraud, one engaged in sexual misconduct, and another former medical director pled guilty to posession of child pornography, according consent orders issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
As the pandemic continues, many of the approximately 30,000 people incarcerated in the state's prisons remain in the hands of these doctors. Addy Baird reported on how a culture of medical neglect has flourished in Louisiana prisons. SERIOUS PRESSURE Billie Eilish said the record-breaking reaction to her Vogue cover makes her "never want to post again"
The 19-year-old singer caused some conversation after she debuted a radically different look on the cover of British Vogue last week.
The photos caused a storm online — Billie's post of the cover became the fastest Instagram photo to reach one million likes, doing so in under six minutes. That is… preposterously fast. Another of the photos is currently the fourth most-liked Instagram post of all time, sitting at 21.5 million likes.
In an appearance on Stephen Colbert's Late Show, Eilish shared that the reaction has been "amazing" but "scary." Eilish said, "I feel like I wanted to post more when less people cared, and now that more people care, it's scary to me."
