Vaccines and travel
THE BIG STORY
Vaccinated people can safely travel, according to new CDC guidance
I haven't even thought about travel since, oh, say, the Mesozoic Era? Or at least that's what it feels like. So it took me a minute to process the newly-announced guidance from the CDC: Vaccinated people can safely travel, but must continue to take COVID-19 safety precautions, like wearing a mask in public and socially distancing.
The news comes as the summer travel season approaches, amid an increase in the number of vaccinated Americans. About 56 million people in the US, or 16.9% of the total population, are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, and 100 million people have received at least one vaccine dose.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a White House briefing, "Fully vaccinated people can resume travel at low risk to themselves." She noted, though, that while COVID-19 numbers are climbing nationwide, "I would advocate against general travel overall." Scott Olson / Getty Images STAYING ON TOP OF THIS
A US Capitol Police officer was killed after someone rammed a truck into them
A suspect drove his vehicle into two Capitol Police officers, killing one and injuring the other on Friday.
Authorities said that after the suspect rammed his vehicle into the officers, he emerged out of the car "with a knife in hand," and began to "lunge toward" the officers. The suspect was shot by at least one officer, and later died of his injuries.
Acting US Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman announced Friday afternoon that the officer killed was William "Billy" Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force and a member of the Capitol Division's First Responders Unit.
The attack comes months after an angry mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol building, resulting in the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. Two men have been charged with assaulting the officer during the riot. SNAPSHOTS

The progressive group that helped bring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress is launching its first primary challenge of 2022
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez winning a primary challenge was one of the most memorable recent political moments. In 2018, she defeated a long-time incumbent in a Democratic primary in New York.
In the last three years, Justice Democrats, the group that helped launch Ocasio-Cortez, helped defeat three Democratic incumbents — and they have their first Democratic target for next year's election, and a chosen candidate to take him down.
The group is launching Odessa Kelly's campaign against Rep. Jim Cooper, setting up a primary fight between a community organizer from East Nashville, Tennessee and the moderate incumbent.
If elected, Kelly would also be the first openly gay Black woman to be elected to Congress, something she said she wasn't even aware of until proofreading the press release announcing her candidacy.
