1. Assembly elections | 34 constituencies go to polls in West Bengal

Over 86 lakh voters in West Bengal will decide the political fate of 284 candidates, when 34 Assembly constituencies, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's home turf Bhabanipur, go to polls in the seventh phase, amid a raging second wave of COVID-19.

2. Karnataka Cabinet likely to decide on on lockdown-like curbs

While Ministers on Sunday said a decision in this regard was likely during the Cabinet meeting, official sources said another one on the matter of free of cost vaccinations might also be taken.

3. 500-oxygen bed ITBP COVID centre to open in Delhi

A 500-oxygen bed COVID care centre operated by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in south Delhi will open on Monday as coronavirus cases register a sharp rise in the national capital, officials said on Sunday.

4. Coast Guard launches search operation for missing fishermen from T.N.

Eleven Tamil Nadu fishermen went missing after their boat was allegedly hit by a ship off the Oman coast, prompting the Indian Coast Guard to deploy a vessel to launch search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard vessel is expected to reach the spot today, sources said in Kochi.

5. Bangladesh closes land borders with India amid spike in COVID-19 cases

Passenger travel from India to Bangladesh via land will remain closed from Monday for 14 days, Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen told reporters.

6. Mizoram extends COVID-19 restrictions

The Mizoram government has extended the existing restrictions in Aizawl and 10 other district headquarters for one more week to stem the spread of COVID-19 and expedite contact tracing. The restrictions, including curbs on movement of people and night curfew, were to be lifted from 4 a.m. today.

7. Week-long curfew imposed in Uttarakhand's Dehradun

The district authorities imposed a week-long curfew from Monday evening to tackle the surge in coronavirus cases. The curfew will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday and go on till 5 a.m. on May 3.

8. Third phase of Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls today

According to the State Election Commission, voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Shamli, Meerut, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Kasganj, Firozabad, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Unnao, Amethi, Barabanki, Balrampur, Siddharthanagar, Deoria, Chandauli, Mirzapur and Ballia.

9. Government to meet bidders today for second tranche of commercial coal mine auction

The Centre will meet prospective bidders on Monday for 67 mines offered for sale in the second tranche of the commercial coal mining auction, industry sources said. This is the highest number of mines on offer in a particular tranche after the commencement of the auction regime in 2014.

10. Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developments

The number of positive coronavirus cases in India recorded in the last 24 hours stands at 3,54,653, taking the tally in the country to 1,73,04,571, at the time of publishing this newsletter. The death toll from the disease stands at 1,95,099.
