Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy
| TUE, MAR 30, 2021 | | | Hello, Here are some of the key stories we are following at CNBC.com: - Covid eviction ban: The CDC this week extended its eviction moratorium for renters until the end of June. The move is intended to protect renters who are struggling financially during the pandemic and otherwise might be forced out of their apartments. Landlords with relatively small property portfolios are feeling the squeeze, as well. CNBC's Diana Olick reports that several of them are selling rental properties to recoup some losses.
- The fight over SALT caps: There's been a lot of talk about how Democrats want to hike taxes on the rich to pay for President Biden's ambitious initiative to revamp America's infrastructure. But Democrats in high-tax states are pushing to bring back a big, fat cut for wealthier families in the form of uncapped federal deductions for state and local taxes, or SALT. The Trump tax reform law of 2017 capped the deduction, which includes local property taxes, at $10,000. Business leaders in New York, a state with high property taxes, are among those lobbying the Biden administration to eliminate the SALT cap, CNBC's Brian Schwartz reports.
- Goldman Sachs at SCOTUS: This case reaches back to the days of the 2008 financial crisis. Several shareholders argue that Goldman artificially inflated its share price with generic statements such as "our clients' interests always come first." The case focuses on the bank's marketing of a collateralized debt obligation called Abacus and other CDOs, and its failure to disclose heavy bets against the products. CNBC's Tucker Higgins reports that the justices, however, didn't appear to likely to offer a sweeping ruling either way.
