Georgia!
EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello,
The 2020 election just won't end. Today, after weeks of intense, expensive campaigning Republicans Sen. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue face off with Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively, in runoff elections that will decide the balance of power in the Senate.
The CNBC Politics team has been covering the ups and downs in the race and will stay on the story until the winners are decided, which could take a few days.
The big issue at play: "In the final push before the crucial Georgia U.S. Senate runoffs on Tuesday, Republicans and Democrats share this closing message: The stakes can't be any higher, and the fate of each party's agenda rests on the two races, writes Hannah Miao.
The runoffs will shape what Joe Biden can do early in his term: "Biden has said another coronavirus relief package will be his priority when he takes office. While Democrats could pass an aid bill with GOP support, a Senate majority would help them shape it more to their liking. [Mitch] McConnell may resist holding a vote on a proposal that includes state and local government relief," writes Jacob Pramuk.
The Republican senators got a late boost from real estate and financial industry donors: "Donors on Wall Street are contributing to Perdue and Loeffler because they are worried that a Democratic Senate would help President-elect Joe Biden push for tighter regulations on the financial industry, a GOP strategist with clients in the banking industry said," writes Brian Schwartz.
