Capitol aftershocks

Unrest has subsided in Washington, D.C., but tensions remain high a day after a violent mob loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in a stunning attempt to overturn the election. Just as Congress certified Joe Biden's victory and Trump pledged an orderly transition of power (but didn't concede), resignations began piling up at the White House and calls grew louder to force the president out of office via the 25th Amendment or impeachment.

While lawmakers from across the political spectrum blame Trump for the unprecedented insurrection, the shadow of Wednesday's attack is certain to stretch beyond his final two weeks in office, leaving it up to Biden to heal the nation and govern in the face of political polarization. On Thursday, the first criminal charges from the riot were filed in federal court, with more participants likely to be apprehended before Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20 out of fear that many of them could return for more.Andrew Mach
