The nightmare before Christmas in Dover

Greetings, Quicktake readers! This week, gridlock at U.K. ports sparks turmoil for stranded truckers. Plus, Trump flexes his presidential powers, risking the first veto override of his term. Stream now for free.

Chaos in Dover

Vital trade and travel links between the U.K. and Europe reopened this week after France cut off shipments from Britain's busiest ferry port on Sunday over a mutant strain of Covid-19 that forced London and surrounding areas into lockdown. Still, huge backlogs of truckers stranded at the Port of Dover since Saturday remain, with many waiting to take coronavirus tests required for entry into France—and running out of patience, Bloomberg's Lizzy Burden told Quicktake.

"They just want to get home for Christmas, they want to see their families, they want to see their kids…The toilets are overflowing. They're miserable."

Meanwhile, the U.K. and EU on Thursday struck a provisional post-Brexit trade deal, a historic feat tempered by the tumult in Kent. "It feels like a dress rehearsal for Brexit," Burden said. "This is the chaos that we were told we might have to expect at the end of the year when the U.K. leaves the single market and customs union on the 31st of December."Andrew Mach

  • One silver lining: A volunteer army of British Sikhs delivered thousands of free chickpea curries and pizzas to the stranded truck drivers.

What to watch if

...you can't put your iPhone down. Having hired several former Tesla execs in recent years, Apple is reportedly targeting 2024 to build a self-driving car with sensors that provide a real-time, 3-D view of the world.

...you miss that jet-set life. The next pandemic-era gadget is here: Sky Scape is a 22-inch digital airplane window that mimics a flight's ascent and descent through the clouds from sunrise to sunset.

...you need some space. In Shenzhen, aka China's Silicon Valley, apartments in "handshake buildings" (ones so close together that neighbors can shake hands out the window) cost 43.5 times a resident's annual pay. Watch Take Geo.

One question, answered

What can Congress do next? A day after Trump's surprise attack on the historic Covid-19 relief package, he vetoed a $740.5 billion defense bill, in part, for failing to address Section 230 protections for Big Tech.

  • The thing is, the bill passed both the House and Senate by enough votes to override the veto, with Nancy Pelosi promising action next week when members of Congress could be called back to D.C.

The fake meat war continues. Slaughter-free meat is making the jump from the lab to the factory line, and Singapore has become the first country to allow its sale. Bloomberg's Mark Cudmore has a taste on Take Geo.
