Driving into 2021

One of the bright spots in this most surreal year has been the fact that, for those of us interested in cars—for that matter, interested in any escape whatsoever, however brief—we can still get in our vehicles and drive because at least the highway was open.

We fell in love with day trips in the U.S., discovered a new class of roadside motels, and dreamt about hitting the road for longer spells in Spain, Prince Edward Island, and the South.

But our car critic had the choicest gig: test-driving over 66 new luxury vehicles over the past 12 months.

While plenty were forgettable, a very few achieved the right combination of thoughtful design, fair pricing, intuitive technology, and performance, while the very best provided a thrilling driving experience and added sex appeal.

From the Pages of Businessweek

Some of the best new books as recommended by business and finance leaders aren't technically business books at all.

An attempt to find historical analogies to present-day issues run through the selections. Erik Larson's epic retelling of Winston Churchill's handling of the 1940 Blitz, The Splendid and the Vile, "speaks to fearless leadership in the darkest hour." A biography of James Baker III shows "the seeds of today's hyper-partisan politics being planted."

A year that brought renewed attention to the legacy of racial inequality sent three people on our list to Isabel Wilkerson's Caste. The toughest takeaway was that "other countries modeled their own caste structures on the U.S."

Not all the selection are as serious. Sam Wasson's history of the movie Chinatown gave new meaning to that old chestnut to "bet on talent." Glennon Doyle's memoir Untamed, meanwhile, is heralded as "an authentic and empowering kick in the tail."
