Stripe. Chime. Robinhood. Coinbase. If you aren't familiar with these names yet, you likely will be soon. They're the backbone of the future of finance, and banks and other global payment giants have taken notice of these digital financial services apps.
Take Plaid for example, a platform that allows you to connect your bank (more than 11,000 of them) to your payment apps (Venmo, etc.). Visa planned to acquire Plaid, but as with any newsworthy acquisition, comes extra scrutiny over antitrust concerns and the DOJ has filed a suit to block this acquisition alleging it would limit competition in the industry. Plaid isn't the only deal like this: Credit Karma is reportedly in talks to sell a piece of its business to Square, while Intuit is set to buy Credit Karma, which also owns TurboTax. Mastercard is another brand planning to buy a fintech app. Meanwhile, Visa CEO Al Kelly calls this potential purchase an "insurance policy" to neutralize the threat to the debit business.
With the surge of fintech apps changing the game of banking and increasing partnerships between banks and fintech apps, what's the future of regulation in the space? Al Kelly is joining the CNBC Evolve Summit this Tuesday – we're thrilled to hear from him in conversation with Carl Quintanilla talking the future of mobile payments and innovative tech moving money globally.
