Biden's Cabinet full of firsts

President-elect Joe Biden this week named senior officials he'll nominate to his administration in the first meaningful action toward his goals of appointing a diverse Cabinet and restoring America's global alliances and relationships. His picks include some familiar faces and historic firsts if confirmed. Biden will receive classified intelligence briefings after the GSA acknowledged his victory on Monday and Trump, who made clear that he wasn't ready to concede, called on his agencies to cooperate with the transition.Andrew Mach

  • Antony Blinken, Secretary of State: Longtime Biden adviser and former deputy secretary of state under Barack Obama
  • Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary: Ex-DHS deputy secretary; would be first Latino and immigrant to head the agency
  • Avril Haines, Director of National Intelligence: Former CIA official; would be the first woman to lead the intelligence community
  • Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations: Career diplomat and former assistant secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs; highest-ranking Black official named so far
  • Jake Sullivan, National Security Adviser: Former Hillary Clinton aide and adviser on national security when Biden was vice president
  • John Kerry, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate: Ex-secretary of state in a new post to coordinate action against climate change
  • Janet Yellen, Secretary of the Treasury: First female Federal Reserve chair; would be the first woman to head the department
