Hello,
Sure, the calendar says there are only two weeks left in this election campaign. But two weeks in politics can be a lifetime, especially these days. Just in the past few weeks we've seen the death of a Supreme Court justice, the nomination of her replacement and subsequent confirmation hearings, President Trump's coronavirus diagnosis and recovery, two debates, a canceled debate, dueling town halls, and controversial reporting about Joe Biden's son Hunter.
So, what could the next two weeks possibly bring? There's another debate scheduled for Thursday, for one. Both candidates will be hitting the road to rally supporters. Former President Obama will campaign for Biden this week. Millions continue to vote early, as well. Congress and the administration, meanwhile, are still trying to hash out the terms for a new economic stimulus package – particularly as Covid-19 cases start to spike again ahead of what could be a rough winter.
Then there will be a deluge of polls down the stretch. The polling picture doesn't look great for Trump at the moment. He's down big in national polls and has consistently trailed Biden in several battleground states. But there's hope for Trump, too. The popular vote doesn't decide who will be president. Some of those swing state polls are close enough to indicate tossups on election night and beyond.
With millions more than usual voting by mail, the count will be slower and more meticulous, and given to potential legal challenges. It might be days before we find out who wins. So while the campaign might be over in two weeks, the real fight may only just begin on Election Day.
