Just Do It "When your back's against the wall, you don't test things, you don't pilot things, you just do things," Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins said at this week's @Work Summit. Clear in every discussion, whether organizations were ready or not, digital acceleration moved at warp speed. This was certainly no exception at Cisco. The organization drove rapid innovation (think: a chat bot boom) to solve for the influx of demand that flew with the onset of the pandemic. "When you're in a crisis, there's tons of creativity, there's a huge desire to help and you just do things. You don't think about it, you don't plan, you just get it done," Robbins added. Feeling's Mutual The unrelenting pressure to act and act fast has hit the desks of every leader we spoke to, including the co-founder-CEO power trio of Box, Slack and Okta. These three took time to lean outside of their own organizations and lean on each other to brainstorm, troubleshoot, and problem-solve during this uniquely challenging moment in history. "I feel like I have definitely talked to you both ten times as much since the pandemic than the entire period of time prior to that, and that's a wonderful thing … there is a lot of mutual support," Slack's Stewart Butterfield says. Encourage Courage When it comes to ending racial inequity at the workplace, a plan is a must, but action is taking on new meaning. Ford Foundation's Darren Walker explored the essential work of dismantling unjust systems at work. "CEOs and corporations need to go deeper and really create a new playbook." In this new moment, big statements, paychecks and talk of action simply aren't enough. "A lot of CEOs who are trying to do the right thing feel caught … in a system that doesn't encourage courage. When we have a system that does not encourage courage, we're going to see less risk taking, less innovation, less ingenuity and ultimately it will be bad for corporations and our economy." Walker provides key initiatives for a new playbook reimagining the future of work. Watch the full interview here.
