Organizations across the country have made bold statements about boosting their diversity and inclusion efforts in the last few months. We've been focused on the follow-through and times are changing. Just yesterday, a major Wall Street bank named a female CEO for the first time. This past Thursday we spoke to more than a dozen leaders (in diversity roles and beyond) from Uber, Google, IBM, Merck, Carnival, Blavity and others for critical, and sometimes uncomfortable, conversations about taking immediate, concrete action addressing racial disparities in their organizations. There was a ton to take away from these discussions. Here are the biggest themes that stood out to us that transcended across each conversation, from every leader. - Workforce diversity fuels innovation and business growth. Diversity of thinking comes from diversity of people – it's a business imperative. Think about it as your DROI: Diversity Return on Investment.
- Real, raw conversations and an open dialogue in the workplace are good.
- There's never been a better time for minority entrepreneurs and founders to seek venture capital. Everyone is in search of diversifying their portfolio in a real way.
- CQ (Cultural Intelligence) is the new-age EQ and IQ. Having that pulse on the diversity playing field will define the great leaders of tomorrow.
In this week's newsletter, we're featuring the full interview with IBM's Ginni Rometty and P-TECH's Rashid Davis during the Inclusion Forum. We also heard from Accenture CEO Julie Sweet, who joined our @Work livestream earlier this summer. They're all in on the intersection of inclusivity meeting innovation, and some other stories this week tackled this exact idea.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: In less than two weeks, we'll be back with another @Work Spotlight event with a finance focus, addressing how top finance leaders are successfully striking the balance of weathering the storm of an uncertain business climate while planning for the future. We'll discuss: lessons learned during the current crisis that can be applied permanently; the strategies, data and automation tools that can be leveraged to help manage uncertainty and lead to a stronger post-crisis posture; how to effectively engage employees, customers, and investors; and much more. You can still request a ticket. | How coronavirus could usher in a new age of automation | From burger-flipping machines to car-building robots — not to mention high-powered software taking on more and more administrative tasks — automation is rapidly making hundreds of skills obsolete in the U.S. economy.
