At WIRED, we've always maintained that the future is something to be excited about. 2020 is putting that to the test, but if you're looking for an antidote to despair, we can help! Last week we announced this year's WIRED25—a group including scientists, engineers, artists, political leaders, teenage coding prodigies, and activists, all of whom are working hard to fix the most vexing problems of our time. Starting today at 5pm ET and on the next two Wednesdays, many of them will join us for a series of livestream conversations as part of this year's WIRED25 celebration. We'll have speakers from France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, the Philippines, Scotland, Taiwan, and across the USA. Best of all, for the first time, thanks to our sponsors Samsung and Vonage, it will all be free. You can sign up to attend here, and we'll also be streaming all three days of conversation on our website, Periscope, Facebook, and YouTube pages. Please join us! Despite, or perhaps because of, everything this pandemic has ground to a halt, it's been all the more inspiring to see new innovations continue to crop up in recent months. From technology that facilitates the return to school and work to Burning Man's pivot to VR, many have come up with technical solutions to help life during coronavirus continue. And in non-pandemic fields, innovation continues apace. A physics professor is well on his way to building an engine that could send people to faraway stars using electricity. A superhuman AI software promises to make chess-playing more creative. Elon Musk has a new plan to implant digital devices in our brains, for better or for worse. Thank you, as always, for reading and supporting WIRED's work. Below, I've included eight of my favorite recent stories. I hope you'll give them a read if you haven't already. And I hope you'll join us throughout September for our WIRED25 celebration! Nicholas Thompson |
