Could Trump pay a price for rushing RBG's replacement?
EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello,
President Trump is in a rush to get his third justice on the Supreme Court. But voters have a warning for him: not so fast.
New CNBC/Change Research polls show that most people don't think Trump should fill the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat on the Supreme Court if he loses the election to Joe Biden. In six swing states – Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – 52% of respondents said the president shouldn't get to fill the seat if he loses in November. Nationally, 57% feel the same way.
These results point to potential political peril for Trump and Senate Republicans, whose majority in the chamber is at risk this fall. The push to quickly install a new justice, which would likely give conservatives a 6-3 edge on the court, is firing up the Republican base. Yet the GOP could potentially turn off some voters and in turn build support for Democrats.
Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, however, don't seem worried about it. All signs point to them moving as quickly as possible to replace Ginsburg. A Supreme Court appointment is for a lifetime, and this could ensure that the court is conservative for decades. That might make the risk for short-term political fallout worth it for the GOP.
