As we approach the traditional start of the school year, the CDC is warning that there could be dire consequences to public health if K-12 schools don't open. The World Bank cautions that keeping children out of school could ultimately cost a generation $10 trillion in earning power. Color us a little dubious about that number, but the fact remains, keeping kids out of school will have an economic impact.
It will also have an impact on your business. If kids are at home, it will affect workers' ability to return to the office (if and when they are asked to), and also could affect productivity at home, as parents juggle multiple responsibilities. This burden will likely have a greater impact on mothers and lower-income workers, exacerbating existing inequities.
As with so much happening these days, this issue has become highly politicized. And it's undoubtedly complicated, and realities vary greatly geographically. It's our hope that for the sake of our future workforce, good sense and good policy will prevail.
