Technology, created in Silicon Valley has made remote work possible during the pandemic. Ironically, that technology allowing people to work from anywhere is causing many workers to leave the Bay Area for good. Will the companies themselves pull up stakes and leave California too?
All eyes have been on the power players (Google, Facebook, Salesforce) with their long-term remote work policies and de-location packages, but one data-analysis giant is officially relocating its headquarters outside Silicon Valley, an unsubtle blow to the Bay Area and a potential start of a new wave of tech. While the pandemic may have been the catalyst for the departure, some leaders have been vocal critiques of the Silicon Valley monoculture, and are rewriting the rules for Silicon Valley as we know it. More on that below, plus more stories that caught our eye this week.
In the spirit of rewriting the rules, so too are so many leaders, from Slack to Intel to Mondelez. We'll be talking to Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield, Intel Chief People Officer Sandra Rivera and more at our @Work Summit, talking through the new opportunities ahead.
